Nanotechnology Lenses Help Focus the Lighting Industry

The Czech company IQ Structures is changing the way we think about light. They’ve found new ways to use holograms, three-dimensional images formed from light, projecting them on to records for instance. And they’re also creating works of art that move as the viewers eye rove across their surface. The technology is made possible thanks to these tiny flexible lenses that use nanotechnology to capture and manipulate light. Martin Jotov says the result is a light source that can be produced in mass quantities on a sheet of plastic. We are making the optics much smaller and the classical optics, at the same time, much more precise, because we are controlling every tiny dot of the optics. So we are able to control all the light coming from the LED source, or almost all the light coming from the LED source and send it exactly where it is needed. The resulting light looks less like a traditional LED and more like a computer screen that can emit a highly focused light beam. When you are illuminating straight, sometimes half of the light is shining in undesired angles into the eyes of people, into the houses, into the bushes. But mainly you need most of the light on the straight.

You can see how it works. The lenses send more light where it should be and that reduces light pollution and saves money. So what this allows the consumers or the users of these luminaries is to either have fewer lights, saving energy or they can have more light where they desire this. That same printing technology is allowing the group to etch microscopic security holograms on the surface of all kinds of materials. So that we are using very highly sophisticated equipment, mainly the electron beam lithography. Which you can imagine as a stream of electrons that we used as a very sharp pencil that they used to create tiny structures on top of the foil. And this is used to create very nice security features that are used for protection of passports, visas, banknotes. These holograms are currently used to protect valuables ranging from passports to currency in about 20 countries.
